Great loop is the name given to the circumnavigation of the eastern part of North America. This is sometimes referred to as the Great Circle Route and depending on the options used for the navigation; the trip could vary between 5000 miles and 7500 miles. Personal water crafts and yachts are generally used for the great loop, though sailboats and powerboats are used as well. Boaters who travel the great loop are known by the name loopers. Some loopers try to take advantage of the downstream current of the rivers including Illinois, Mississippi, Tombigbee and the Black Warrior River, by following counterclockwise direction.
The number of loopers increases day by day and this has resulted in the formation of associations of loopers. They share a common interest and adventure about the curiosity and knowledge about the Great Loop. One such association is known as America’s Great Loop Cruiser’s Association. This association aims at providing more information and increase the experience of the loopers, those who learn and dream about a safe exploration of the Great Loop. Great Loop is considered to be one of the safest and long distance cruising routes found anywhere else on the globe. Travelling in a wonderful trip through Great Loop is considered to be a lifetime adventure. Many Loopers prefer to retire and sell everything. After this retirement, they choose to live in boats. Members of AGLCA meet thrice a year at different locations. These reunions are organized by the association and are intended at allowing the mingling of friends and new members of AGLCA. They share stories about trips and information on safety, vessel checks and related details on cruising. Looper crawl is yet another highlight of the entire event. Since the association provides everything needed for the members including safety, information and networking. They also provide online tools for its members to assist them in cruising in the Great Loop without fear and safety concerns. |
